The association « Mémoire Mulhousienne » (« Memory of Mulhouse ») has been founded in 1994. Its objective is the preservation and valorisation of graves and funeral monuments of historical or architectural value at Mulhouse burial grounds.
Mulhouse’s history is highly diverse and mostly unknown. Most well-known figures who shaped the city’s history are buried at Mulhouse Central cemetery.
The members of « Mémoire Mulhousienne » are all voluntary contributors, helping safeguarding the historical and architectural heritage of Mulhouse cemeteries, and making it known to the general public.
Since 2007, historical graves of the Central cemetery are protected as « Urban Heritage ». Part of the cemetery is also classified as « Significant Heritage Site » since 2017.
This is granting sustainable protection for more than 100 historical gravestones and monuments, which all narrate different chapters of the city’s history.
The association coordinates:
- Educational tours for young people
- Regular weeding and scrub clearance campaigns
- Thematic visiting tours on the annual European Heritage Day
- Guidance for heirs about gravestone maintenance
- Restoration of endangered historical gravesites
The association « Mémoire Mulhousienne » works in partnership with the City of Mulhouse and is a member of the Advisory Council for Mulhouse Heritage (« Conseil Consultatif du Patrimoine Mulhousien »).
